Graphic Design Emphasis
When I was younger I really thought I had no artistic abilities whatsoever. I remember looking around the class even in elementary school at other children’s work and thinking my work was so insufficient. I was afraid to be myself, express myself through my work, and felt insecure. Granted, not everyone can draw the perfect sunshine, tree, and house, but I never felt like I could even do that well. It wasn't until college during an Intro to Visual Arts class in college when the teacher told me I had artistic sensibilities and that I should do something artistic with my career. From then on I had the encouragement I needed to get more involved with learning more about art and its techniques. I have really seen my artistic talents come to life and evolve in this time and have also come to enjoy art in general. I love that feeling you get from walking through a museum or exhibit and how it opens my soul. It is quite hard to explain, but I feel engrossed and alive.
I pull inspiration from people like Ruth Ansel and her relation to fashion in her designs, as this is a style I like to imitate. I also enjoy the classic and timeless works by Milton Glaser. His work is clean, simple, and well designed to stand the test of time. Also the corporate logo designs from Paul Rand inspire me to be simple, but effective and original. His works are notability recognized and many of which you can still see in use today. Recently I have been enjoying finding artists on social media sites such as Instagram and browsing through their work day to day. I feel that opening up my creativity by looking to others work helps if I am feeling stuck on a project. A couple of current artists I enjoy are Daniel Patrick and Nicolas Fredrickson. These artists take hand-lettered projects and turn them into digital works. Their projects have a whimsical feel, but also the modern feel that you get from digital work. I have done a project similar to this last year in Experimental Typography, but would really like to explore these techniques more.
I especially love to paint and almost anything with my hands, but more recently I am really enjoying what I have been learning in my graphic design classes. I feel I have such great opportunities to learn so much more and cannot wait to explore these opportunities in my current and future classes. I am finding that I love all of those little details in a piece that can really take your work from mediocre to excellent, even if that means having to slightly move one single line over and again until it feels just right. I see designs everywhere that could really use more of that fine tuning that I am learning and I hope to one day work on those projects to make them that much better.
